Troubleshooting Packet Loss

If you have ever experienced packet loss, you’ve noticed the effects in all of your digital communications. Problems can occur like issues with the phone system including phone calls and video calls as well as mutation of data and images that the network is receiving. There are a multitude of reasons why you might be experiencing packet loss. Let’s troubleshoot some of your problems with packet loss to get your network up and running again.

Congested Links

This is one of the first things to look for when you discover that you are having packet loss troubles. Because networks are so intricate, data that you send needs to go through a multitude of different links to make it to its final destination. Sometimes one of the links that it needs to pass by is congested, so essentially, your data needs to wait its turn in line so that it can peacefully pass through. There are a couple of ways that you can try to avoid or limit the amount of packet loss because of congestion. The first is to increase the bandwidth of the congested links and the second is to do a Quality of Service. The QoS will give priority to certain data like audio or video first, but will not fix the overall congestion problem at hand.

Device Problems

Problems with the device are often due to traffic and over-congestion. In this case the router, firewall, or switch can not keep up with the amount traffic and data trying to pass through. Like the congested links, data that is blocked because traffic in the router, firewall, or switch must wait its turn to pass through. There are a few ways that you can troubleshoot this problem, too. The easiest and most efficient way is to replace the hardware. Your new and improved hardware appliance will be able to handle the maximum capacity for the amount of traffic that is going through.

Faulty Hardware

This is one of the simplest problems that you might run into, but people often overlook that the problem might just be a piece of faulty hardware. When hardware is physically malfunctioning, an error message should occur on your screen, which will be your first clue. The best way to fix this problem is obvious- invest in some new technology for your office. The best way to determine what part of the system is not working properly is to do a detailed assessment and troubleshooting of your system.
