Troubleshooting Your PBX Phone System

Telecommunications are the lifeblood of most businesses, either as a way for customers or clients to reach out with questions and to make purchases, or for employees to work together and accomplish tasks. Your business phone system makes all this more possible. A PBX (or Private Branch Exchange) phone system is one of the most user-friendly and low-maintenance systems you can choose for your business (especially with VoIP). However, nothing can be 100% error free 100% of the time. If you do find that your PBX phone system encounters errors, here are some troubleshooting tips to consider.

Jitter

One of the most common issues with PBX phone systems is jitter. Jitter is the term for call quality issues resulting from disrupting the call data during transmission. When the data is transmitted online, sometimes it gets out of order. A jitter buffer is a device that makes sure the data packets stay in the proper sequence and eliminates jitter. If you don’t have one and you’re experiencing jitter, installing one will fix the issue.

General Quality Issues

If you’re having other issues with the call quality aside from jitter, the issue may be your bandwidth. A VoIP PBX phone system is easy and relatively cheap to operate, but it needs great internet to run best. Start by checking your bandwidth and prioritizing your VoIP traffic. You may need a newer or better router if you have the proper bandwidth and prioritize the traffic.  Finally, double-check your settings if those tips don’t fix the problem.

Busy Signals

When customers call in and get a busy signal, it may discourage them from calling again or even make them go to a competitor. Often, busy signals are the result of hardware that isn’t connected correctly. Try resetting the system and ensuring all the phone sets are correctly connected.

Latency

Finally, latency is when your calls have lag or a slow connection (it often sounds like an echo). This can result in a very frustrating user experience. Latency is often caused by inadequate bandwidth or incorrect settings that don’t queue or handle the data correctly.
