This Thursday, March 31st, is World Backup Day, and you better believe we’ll be celebrating it.. World Backup Day is an independent initiative to raise awareness about the importance of data backup and preservation. Whatever the cause may be — theft/hacking, hardware failure, what have you — a step as simple as a few clicks can save immeasurable heartache and headache in the unfortunate event of data loss. Here’s how, and why, you should celebrate World Backup Day with us.
How to Properly Backup Data
There are two general methods of backing up your data, and both of them are easy and hassle-free. Many data backup solutions will even regularly and automatically continue to backup your data once it’s set up.
The first option is a local backup. Local backups are stored externally of your regular machine, on external hard drives, and kept nearby for easy access. So if you’re backing up your phone, you can store the data on your computer hard drive, which will then in turn be backed up to another external standalone hard drive when you backup your computer.
The second option is an offsite or cloud backup. Offsite backups work similarly to local, although the storage device is kept secure in a different location, to keep it safe in the event of a catastrophic disaster like a building fire. Cloud backups, on the other hand, allow you to upload your data to the Internet. So long as the data service you backup to stays afloat, your data will be safe and accessible from anywhere once it’s online.
Generally, we recommend having both a local and offsite backup. This will give you peace of mind that your data is unquestionably safe and secure.
Why Backup Data?
People around the world create over 1.8 zettabytes of data every year. That’s 1,800,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes, or 1.8 trillion gigabytes. In layman’s terms, that’s a heck of a lot of data. Despite that fact, World Backup Day found that almost 30% of people have never backed up their data, while 60,000,000 computers will fail this year and over 200,000 phones will be lost or stolen. That’s countless precious, personal, or mission critical files and documents that will be lost in this calendar year alone. Don’t fall victim to laziness, because any of this can happen to you at a moment’s notice.
Take the time out of your week this Thursday to join us in celebrating World Backup Day. As your business data solutions provider, we can’t let you risk the heartbreak of losing all your personal or business files.
