How to Create Comfort in Your Telecommunication Skills

Unfortunately, telecommunication has gotten a bad rep. This is in part because of how tough it is to create a meaningful connection over the phone. When you’re talking to someone face-to-face, you can immediately see their reaction and empathize with what they’re going through. Some telecommunicators aren’t interested in that, which is why we see things like “cold calling” pop up and make us immediately think of negativity. Telecommunication is a necessary part of modern life, but it doesn’t need to be a cold, negative experience—in fact, we have some tips on how you can make sure everyone ends up feeling great about their telecommunication experience.

Put Their Needs First

The world is changing quickly and most people have to do some amount of telecommunications throughout their week, particularly with the rise of remote work. It has its perks but one thing we miss out on is what a face-to-face interaction offers you: their body language, eye contact, and so on. Remember to always stay mindful of others and what their needs may be. This is a great way to connect with someone and will help you be an engaged listener that ultimately is better able to serve whoever you’re speaking to.

Sometimes it may feel like you can jump through this step and get them what they need quicker, but a caller is going to notice when you’re willing to engage with them and will have a better experience as a result. Remember that the customer experience is what matters and put their needs first.

Maintain a Smile

Smiling over the line may seem counterintuitive. No one is going to see you during telecommunication work, so why bother? The truth is that even a fake smile can help us feel better and reduce our stress. Putting on a fake smile before your call will carry over into your voice and mannerisms, creating a better atmosphere for both you and whoever you’re on the line with. Show those pearly whites before dialing a number and see how it feels!

Picture the Person

If you find yourself getting frustrated or in a slog, try to picture whoever’s on the other side of that call. Staying motivated, positive, and friendly can be difficult when you let everything feel like yet another call. Picture who you’re talking to and you’ll better be able to relate to their needs and help them navigate whatever situation they’re in.
