Is Your VoIP Phone System Prepared for a Power Outage?

Depending on your industry, your phone system may be one of your daily operations’ most essential parts, the lifeline through which potential customers connect to your services and your business grows. A reliable and feature-rich phone system is vital because many companies switch from traditional systems to VoIP (Voice over IP) systems. But what happens to your VoIP system when the power is down? Occasional power outages are simply a fact of life in most areas, so it is crucial to be prepared not to miss valuable business opportunities.

Is Your VoIP Phone System’s Power Actually Out?

If you suspect that your VoIP phone system isn’t working because of a power outage, the first thing to do is make sure the power is the culprit. If the lights are still on and other things in the room are still working, it isn’t the power company’s fault. Check your circuit box and make sure that you haven’t thrown a breaker by using too much power in one place. If the whole building has lost electricity (or the entire area – check with your neighbors to see if it’s more than just your building), you will need to contact your landlord or the power company to get the problem fixed.

Connect To Your Backup

If the power is out, it is time to shift your VoIP phone system and your internet equipment (modem and router) over to your battery backup so that at least those systems are functioning. If you don’t have a battery backup, you should look into getting a UPS, uninterruptible power supply, for at least this equipment. They are also valuable to have for each computer as well.

Shift To Your App

If you don’t have battery backups and the power is out, you can also shift your VoIP system to your smartphone and use the app if your service has one. Some VoIP providers also provide a smartphone app that allows you to take your business calls anywhere you take your cell phone.

Set Up Call Forwarding

If you don’t have or aren’t familiar with the app, the next best thing is to have all the calls forwarded. You can forward them to a cell phone or directly to voicemail. If you direct them to voicemail, it won’t be as good as a live person answering, but it is better than there being no answer at all. You can even set up your VoIP system to automatically switch to call forwarding in the event of an outage.
