Every so often, the news will tell us of a new case of hackers gaining access to private and sensitive information. Most often, we hear about these hacks taking place through computers and credit card machines. While these hacks are serious, it is also important to realize your business could be hacked another way, through your phone system. Hackers can gain access to your phone lines and voicemails and cause serious damage to your business by doing so. In order to protect your phone system from harmful hackers, consider the following tips:
- Create a secure voicemail password or code for your business mailbox. Passwords are one of your main lines of defense against hackers, but they are often overlooked. Create a six digit code that has no resemblance to the phone number of the business. It is also helpful to change your passcode every six months or so to help prevent possible hacks.
- Be careful with your call forwarding options and what number you chose when implementing this function. Having calls forwarded to an international number can make it easier for hackers to access your phone system and cause issues.
- Implement a lockout feature when trying to gain access to your voicemails. Many hackers will continue to try and gain access to your voicemails if the first attempt doesn’t work. A lockout feature can stop allowing this to be an option for hackers and can also notify you when an attempt is being made.
- Implement a feature that prevents international calls from being made from your phone system without permission. International calls can cost your business serious money and is one of the main ways hackers’ access phone systems.
