Should You Switch to VoIP for Your Business?

If yours is like many businesses, you know that business phone systems are the life of your business, so you’re doing the responsible thing as a business owner and considering all of your potential options to make sure you’re getting the best deal and the best technology. You’ve had your traditional phone system for a while and it works as well as ever. Does it make sense to switch to something new for your voice solutions? Is there value for your small business in switching to VoIP? What even is VoIP? Let’s find out.

What IS VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice over IP (or Internet Protocol); it essentially means that you are using specialized technology to transform your voice signal into digital signals and transmit them over the internet instead of sending them over traditional phone lines. Most businesses that use VoIP, also choose to use specialized VoIP telephones, but you can also make and receive calls directly on a computer or through a traditional phone with an adapter. If your business doesn’t currently use broadband internet (pretty unlikely these days), you would have to invest in that in order to use a VoIP voice solution.

Is VoIP More Expensive?

The cost of a VoIP phone system will depend on what you currently have and what you actually need. For instance, if you currently have a single cell phone, upgrading to any multi-line phone system would cost more, but be worth it if you have the call volume.  When you compare similar phone systems, VoIP is typically less expensive than traditional service in the long run. This is especially true if you currently pay for broadband internet and traditional phone service, which could be consolidated down to one. Additionally, on VoIP, there is not usually additional charges for “long distance” calls.

Does VoIP Offer Better Service Or Features?

VoIP does generally offer a better phone system experience. VoIP has many benefits that you won’t find on traditional phone lines, including video calling and the ability to ring in multiple locations. There is also improved call quality over many traditional options, and you have the ability to forward your calls to nearly anywhere so you never have to worry about missing an important call.

Are There Other Benefits?

A VoIP phone system is highly versatile and can be customized to meet the user’s needs. This can allow your employees more freedom and flexibility to work efficiently.
