What Are PBX Phone Systems?
Choose the phone system that best fits the needs of your business.

When it comes to the types of phone systems available for businesses, it’s important to choose a service that will best fit your needs. The public branch exchange phone system, otherwise known as PBX features hardware that is installed on site at your business to receive and distribute incoming calls. It gives businesses the freedom to manage and organize their phone calls in order to better serve their customers and clients. It also helps facilitate internal communication throughout the office.

Advantages

The two main advantages of PBX phone systems are the ability to transfer calls and share phone lines. For the first advantage, employees can transfer calls within the company or set up a pre-recorded system that will give callers a menu of options. They will also have access to a directory of extensions, allowing them to gain direct access to the representative they need to speak to. When it comes to the advantage of sharing phone lines, offices with up to 20 employees can share 10 lines that are limited to 10 concurrent calls.

Types

There are four different types of PBX phone systems — traditional, IP PBX, hosted PBX, and virtual PBX.

  • Traditional PBX systems are perfect for companies with more than 50 employees. The initial cost is about $1,000 per seat with recurring costs of about $20 per month. This system uses a landline and hardware box and from there, the lines are distributed to each employee.
  • IP PBX phone systems use digital signals instead of landlines. You’ll use ethernet cords that connect the phones to create a network. It’s a great system for companies with more than 50 employees. The initial cost is about $1,000 with recurring costs of up to $10 per month.
  • Hosted PBX systems are ideal for smaller companies with about 5 to 50 employees. It’s also a slightly cheaper system at about $150 per phone and $45 per month. This is a newer system that is cloud-based and doesn’t include any hardware that you’ll house in your office.
  • Virtual systems work in the same way as the hosted system, but with less features, which could be a great option for companies with one to four employees. There are no initial costs and a $35 per month recurring cost.
