World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

On May 17, 1865, the first International Telegraph Convention was signed, and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) was formed. Since 1969, the anniversary of those two events has served as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (otherwise known as WTISD or World Information Society Day, and formerly as World Telecommunications Day). The International Telecommunications Union has used the occasion to celebrate telecom, bridge the digital divide, and raise awareness about how societies and economies change around the Internet and other Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2016

Every year, WTISD has had a focal theme in its celebration. Last year, 2015, marked the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union, so that union launched the ITU150 awards to recognize important contributors to the world of information technologies. There was also a different celebratory theme each month, including Youth and Innovation, ICT: Drivers of Innovation, and Big Data and Innovation, to name a few.

But that’s enough about last year — what about this year? What about today?! Today, the 151st WTISD, is all about ICT Entrepreneurship for Social Impact. Now what does that mean exactly? ICT entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small to medium-sized businesses are hugely important in sustainable economic growth. ICT experts build innovative tech solutions, they make long-lasting impact on regional, national, and global economies, and they provide sources for new jobs, particularly for the young, digitally native millennials that are currently entering the working world en force.

This year’s theme lines up with ITU’s goals to fully unleash the potential of ICTs for young entrepreneurs and innovators, for small to medium-sized businesses, for start-ups and tech centers. ICTs give us change and practical solutions to make the world a better place.
